Benoit Van Asbroeck is a Lecturer at the ULB on data protection and IP. He is also a practicing attorney and a partner in the Brussels office of Bird & Bird where he leads the Data Protection, Tech & Comms and Media practices in Brussels. He has successfully conducted matters before the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) and lobbied public authorities in the context of CJEU procedures and legislative processes, including a landmark privacy case (Scarlet – CJEU). He is a guest lecturer at the Katholieke Universiteit Brussel and at the University of Valenciennes (France) and acts as a substitute commercial judge and mediator/arbitrator at the World Intellectual Property Office.
He is co-author of the book “Vers un droit européen de la protection des données?” focused on companies’ compliance obligations with respect to the GDPR. Benoit is one of the twelve expert members of the Belgian Council of Intellectual Property which is a body that advises the government on new IP legislation.
Benoit studied law at the University of Brussels. He also holds a DAAD diploma from the University of Tübingen and a LL.M. from the University of Cambridge. He has been a member of the Brussels bar since 1984.
